The Academy of Music is a magnet center that sits on the campus of Hamilton High School which is comprised of several small learning communities and the Humanities Magnet. The other SLC’s include Communication Arts, Global Studies, Business and Interactive Technology and Math Science and Medicine.
Tours begin October 8 and run through November 12. Every Wednesday at 8am. No reservation needed.
At 940 students, 31 faculty, 2 clerks and one director, they are the largest magnet center in the Los Angeles Unified system. The way into the magnet is through the Office of Integration and accumulating enough magnet points to qualify. The Choices Brochure comes out in October of each year. The application for the 2015-2016 school year is due November 15, 2014. For students five miles and beyond, transportation is provided as well as late buses for those who remain for rehearsals and other activities. One additional way into the Magnet is through the talent audition for instrumental and vocal students only.
Although their name indicates a focus on music, they offer all the performing arts. The performance departments include: Drama, Dance, Musical Theater, Choral, and Technical Theater. The music program consists of Jazz, Strings, Winds, Piano, Guitar, Percussion and and Music Technology. Majors are offered in each of the performance areas.
They also offer Honors classes in all the core subjects as well as nearly 29 AP courses.
For those of you without enough magnet points, they offer an audition program for instrumental and vocal students only. You must live in the District and still apply to the Choices program, but the audition will give you an extra boost. Talent auditions are in January.
